Our Interest in Personal Safety and Home Security began in 1968 – on the day Martin Luther King was assassinated. We were a young family with a new baby living in the outskirts of Detroit. We were called out of town that weekend due to the illness of one of our fathers. We left the baby with a trusted neighbor and took off for Ohio. Then … BAM. Dr. King was assassinated - Detroit was burning - and we had no idea what was happening to our family! Remember, the year 1968 was before cell phones!

As we sped toward home, the riots began to escalate. Looting was everywhere. The National Guard was called out to protect the citizens. When we got to the edge of Detroit we were told it was unsafe to enter the city. Our very lives might be at risk. But tears worked miracles! The National Guard escorted us home, back to our family.

Destruction was all around us, but our neighborhood still looked relatively safe. Then night fell! We couldn’t tell what was going on outside - were there strangers there that didn’t belong? What were the shouts and bangs we heard in the distance? How would we protect our family if the need arose? For the next thirteen days and nights, our trusted neighbor sat with us in our home, protecting us - shotgun in hand.

To this day, we remember those feelings of impotence and fear - and never plan to feel those fears again. We know the world has become an increasingly dangerous place, with crime statistics rising annually. We understand the need to protect ourselves - both inside and outside the home. And we know how to do it without a shotgun.
